In this project we researched an environmental disaster and identified the key chemical pollutants involved. We also studied and reflected on how toxic spills impact individuals and communities.
Key Components
Board Game: We created board games to create an informational way to spread awareness of the environmental disaster or to create a simulation of how it affects the environment. Infographic: We created infographics to display information about our environmental disaster scenarios. In our case, it was the Gulf Dead Zone and we informed people about how it affects the environment and what caused it. Pecha Kucha: These are 100 second presentations we made (10 seconds for 10 slides) to inform the audience about the Gulf Dead Zone as fast and efficiently as possible.
Reflection
During this project, I learned how a lot of the problems in our environment can be explained in simple chemicals. It was extremely eye opening and truly surprising as to how exposed we are as people to dangerous chemicals that we are never aware of until it is too late. I feel like I really developed the skill of how to see deeper than the overall picture. For example, the Gulf Dead Zone is a very big problem in the Gulf of Mexico, but why is it a problem? What caused this and how can it be changed? I will use this skill through other projects so that instead of seeing something as simply a problem, I can ask why it is a problem and how the problem can be solved.
